You've got your red light therapy device. Now what? One of the most common questions we hear is how often to use it, and for how long. The good news: consistency matters far more than intensity.
How long should a session be?
Most people get on well with sessions of 10 to 20 minutes per area. Longer isn't better. Red light therapy seems to work best in moderate doses, so stick to the time your device's guide recommends.
How many times a week?
A good starting point is 3 to 5 sessions a week. Some people use their device daily once they're settled into a routine. Give your skin and body time to adjust, especially in the first couple of weeks.
How close should you sit?
Distance affects how much light reaches your skin. Many people use their device around 15 to 30 cm away, but always follow the instructions for your specific device.
When will you notice results?
Red light therapy is a gradual process. Many users report noticing changes after 4 to 8 weeks of consistent use, whether that's skin tone, how rested they feel, or post-workout recovery.
Tips for building a routine
- Pick a regular time. Mornings to start your day, or evenings as part of winding down.
- Start with clean skin. Remove makeup and lotions so the light isn't blocked.
- Protect your eyes. Use the goggles supplied with your device.
- Track your progress. Take a photo or jot down notes weekly so you can see how things change.
Who should check first?
If you're pregnant, have a light-sensitive condition, or take medication that increases light sensitivity, speak to your GP before starting. Want to know more? Read our guide: Is Red Light Therapy Safe?
